Disclaimer: To any native New Yorker reading this right now, I urge you to stop because it's bound to be the lamest post ever. I won't lie, posting it makes me feel like I'm straight- out- of- Iowa- seeing- the- bright- lights- for- the- first- time.
But it was still funny.
So yesterday on my lunch break, I was taking a break from writing and just strolling around through SoHo, looking in the boutiques and cafes.
All of a sudden, two edgy grunge-chic Japanese 20-somethings come out of nowhere and start running after me.
"Oh excruuse me, ma'am! We taking photos of people in the SoHo street, can we take yo picture for magazine," and flashes me a copy of it it, all written in Japanese.
Glitter Magazine Japan. Hmm, somewhat legit, I think.
So I oblige, whatever.
My biggest worry is they're going to make a spectacle of me right there on Prince Street.
But the SoHo hipsters don't seem to care. They skip on by without a blink of an eye.
Or glance up and immediately redirect their gaze as if to say "Oh yeah, we've seen this before."
"What is the brand?" the perky faux-hawk coiffed Harajuku District import asks me as her Wayfarer and skinny-jean donned counterpart snaps away.
I describe my outfit, but then, but then, the real wonderment comes when they photograph my black Lucky Brand leather bag with fringe shooting off the braided strap (I love it because it's versatile and fits my MacBook).
"It's Lucky," I say.
And then, as if I'm unleashing the innermost secret of the kimono's origin, they coo,
"Oooh...RRUUUCKY..."
I can hardly contain my laughter for the rest of the day.
I am extremely tolerant of other cultures and religions and traditions, but I'm sorry, call me bigoted or insensitive, but even the most politically correct people I know laugh at Asian-to-English mispronunciations. Personally, they get me every time!
So to the little Tokyo tween who saves her money to buy Glitter every month...
