Eva in Paris!

A follow up to this post...

Isn't she fabulous?
Straight out of the Sartorialist's look-book.
Gah, I love her.

Machu Picchu opens my floodgates

When I was home last week, I was semi-chastised by my mom, who told me I have to pipe down my traveling.

To paraphrase, "You can't willy-nilly think you can or should go just anywhere because you have a passport."

I almost cried.
Traveling is my oxygen.

It did not help to get Gchat-ted by Emmy J from the Peru airport ... telling me to join her!

And then I see this...

The traveling gods are really really naughty sometimes...

In other news: NYC Half-Marathon August 16...

any takers??!!

The musical keys to my heart

I've been tagged by Kate to tell what songs are the key to my heart.

In her words: "The first man who sings me one of these songs can marry me...we'll work out the details later."

Here is the original post.

1. Not Myself- John Mayer - from his first album, when he was still sweet and vulnerable. I want that John back.

2. Yo Quiero - Camila -upbeat and fun, like something you'd dance around to laughing outside on a Spanish patio. (That or Enrique Iglesias "Hero"...my nods to latin love songs)

3. Via Con Me- Paolo Conte- it makes me want to make a man of George Clooney and live as a European princess in Lake Como for the rest of my life. That is all.

4. She Will Be Loved- Maroon 5- cheese, I know. but I'm sure anyone can sing it better than whiny voiced Adam Levine.

5. Lovely Tonight- Joshua Radin - straightforward and earnest...

Paris: what hiring freeze?

My friend Eva is going to Paris tomorrow for 9 days, staying in an itsy studio (Euro standard!) in the 1st arrondisement near the Tuileries/Louvre.

Let's just say I'm disappointed that Webster/we in the 21st century have not come up with a scathing curse word for "envy."

It is both our dreams to be photographed by the Sartorialist. Soul sisters.

And she thought the following was so funny she has the following quote (by me) on her Gchat status:
"The world is on a hiring freeze, so let's all up and go to Paris for 9 days- Carpe Diem!"

Bahaha, ok, enough about me, here's some pictures of her modeling:

Photos Courtesy Ana Yacubic Photography

I wanted her to try out for this season's America's Next Top Model (girls must be under 5'7" for a change), this NY Mag article, our dreams were crushed.
Oh Tyra...

But anyway, Eva is going to have a fabu time! And she promised to take a lot of pics of her outfits, and well, that's just exciting.

Other Parisian nuggets:

This website (for short term Parisian rentals) will kill me. Just knowing I could live there with the click of the mouse.

Rita Wilson's attempting to be French in Bazaar.

Paris in the Rain via Joanna's blog. Still gorgeous!

Bon voyage Eva! Bisoux!

If you've been, what is your favorite thing about Paris?

Summer re-shaping

Remember this post?

Yeah, well...DC is a no-go this summer. In a nutshell:
The recession is so real, it even refuses my slave labor.

Yes, even though the BYU internship program I was working with assured me I would not have to submit more than 12 applications, I slyly applied for another 10 behind their backs. And good thing, because I only received one offer (from MY OWN said sly shenanigans, mind you).

But that offer fell through.

But you can bet all the ice cream I ate today that it's really OK. It wouldn't have bolstered any graduate school application, nor given me any portfolio-building material.

Who said beggars can't be choosers!

July and August will still find me whisked off to the East Coast, just in time to see the 4th of July parade down Main Street in the darling lake town where my fam vacations.
Americana at it's Yankee-est.
Also, you may find me on the couch of my Park Slope cousins getting some NYC fix. Mmm.

So yeah, me, instead of gunning it like I usually do with any freelance/internship work I can scrounge up, I'm going to be taking 8 credits of school and kicking it at King Henry during May and June, spending hours at Seven Peaks in their aptly named lazy river.

The only thing that changes about the original summer post is the 1/2 marathon with my cousin, who, as an environment and public policy major at her university, will not be at the massive fam reunion because she'll be doing research in Honolulu.
I know, "research"...yeah ;)
That, and The Lion King.

But never fear, cherry blossoms and the Beltway are still in my near future...just all in due time.
I figure I better enjoy this time in my life before I surrender the meaning of carefree for good.

Maybe I'll actually get tan this summer. Stay tuned, and in the meantime, see you at the pool!

Newsbits

A crazy sad (yet brilliantly designed) CO2 emissions interactive world map.

The computer font 'Comic Sans' is now deemed by WSJ as overused!

Video: quite possibly the best ever volleyball kick assist (Stanford Men's VB- my cousin's former team) - (how was that set, Amy?!)

Video: You thought pedaling was all there was to riding a bike.

Buchenwald Concentration Camp prisoners identified.
Bonus: click around on the same Flickr photostream for really neat WWII era photos.

Dooce (former Mormon) talks about popcorn popping and likes my name for their unborn daughter. (She has great photography too)

How to make a baby, in case you didn't know:

Briefly chatted yesterday with my former editor (who has since left the NYC magazine where she worked and I interned last summer), who is now LSAT'ing and working at Blue & Cream Boutique...
Since bandage dresses have been in the back of my mind lately (a la this Herve Leger), I am now obsessed with Preen's Power Bandage Dress....

I can only hope ABS makes a knockoff soon...
if not, then, dreams are recession friendly, right?!
What an epiphany.

I think the above red or black would be rockin' with these shoes of mine:

(they make me about 6'4" but, worry not, I've embraced it...due to a lot of encouragement from short friends/strangers in airports and grocery stores throughout the years who have admitted they wish for my inches).

Balloons

I have a chronic fear of heights (which is ironic considering my own height), and for some reason, when I was younger, I used to be afraid of balloons flying away.

I would get sweaty palms as I held balloon strings, and whenever I saw one or released one, I was found panic-ridden, as if the balloon were a living object with a life sadly blown away...

But this lovely post from the equally as lovely Brittany is just brilliant.

...as is this Miss Dior Cherie Parfum ad, produced by Sofia Coppola!

Oh, to be in Paris right now, in the spring...

Last week, in our bloodshot study break stupor, Rindz and I kayak.com'ed and found roundtrips to Charles de Gaulle for $600.
(This came about because we started naming off airport codes we knew- a requirement for all travel agents to know- yes, it was about 1 AM, don't worry about it...)

To say it was tempting would be a gross understatement. I was about ready to plug in my memorized credit card number (a handy, yet dangerous thing, as I've been known to sleep-shop in early morning hours and then get surprised when packages show up on my doorstep).

Upcoming post to follow about my darling friend Eva who WILL be going in a week or so...

Bisoux for now!

Sarah, Sarah, go away!

Call me a flaming liberal, but I cannot stand Sarah Palin.

She is a good person, yes.

But please, GOP, for goodness sakes, go do some serious PR damage control and bury this woman out of the limelight because she is only making you look like chauvinistic pigs who have managed to reverse notions of what an intellectually capable, Beltway-astute woman represents.

If Alaskans were dense enough to elect her, then fine, keep her there...in the land where one can barbarically shoot rifles from a helicopters, Todd can run his snowmobiling business, and one has the God-given right to keep an eye on those pesky Russians.

My mom's Alaska-native college roommate said this over our families ritual Christmas Eve dinner this past year: "I know what it's like up there, and as such, I've worked very hard to keep myself out."

I am seriously embarrassed and a little angry at Palin in the following.
She's doing me, and other fellow women, a huge disservice.

Too bad everything she says is unfortunately... comical. And the fact that another fellow woman has reduced her to that is plain unfortunate.

I'm home

For either a couple of days or a couple of weeks or maybe a couple months...I know I know, it begs an explanation, but I have to leave it at that for now.

I really think the highlight of today's little trek may have been, oh, circa Corona, Calif., when I turned on Odyssey's "Native New Yorker" and knew more words than my mom.

'Wow, it has been a while!' were her words.
I think the true MoTown mantle has shifted ;)

This, and the fact that it's my parents 25th wedding anniversary today and we rolled up to the house (about 7 or 8, actually!) to my dad dressed handsomely in a white shirt and bow tie, with table set, flowers arranged, and table set for 3 (other little sis wasn't home from volleyball yet, what else is new)...
I am an expert party crasher!
HAPPY 25th HANK AND LIZ!

So friends, this is where I have been.
I will return all of your calls tomorrow.

Love you all.

Easter bearZ

Easter photo sesh (yes I know this is a week late) on the steps of the Eyring Science Center. Notice how I'm on the stair below, and still taller. YES.

(Dress brought to me by the wonderful young lady at the 50 Rock Anthropologie, as praised in this post.)

A sampling of good times:

Studying in the wee hours of the morning

Taking study breaks to watch 'vintage' Britney VMA clips on YouTube

Nightly sleepovers/PCD dance parties

Being bearZ together: sleepover bearZ, workout bearZ, tired bearZ, etc...

Calling our rooms "La Oficina" and "La Pharmacia" (because I have so many painkillers left over from last semester's hell)

Entertainment a la 'Nancy' (the feature on my phone that reads aloud text messages. Yes, we named 'it')

Walking on each others backs (like Asian masseuses) to crack them; me laughing too hard to properly exhale, thwarting good crack-age

Being bottomless pits ('Woof')

Mutual ZARA appreciation

Comparing Spain stories. Mostly about the discotecas, duh.

'Hada Lugo'

Discussions over the legitimacy of Utah's Mexican taco shops. (Diego's- YES; Rancherito's formerly known as Beto's? NO).

Priceless.

New spring beauty look

"Bloodshot"

How to get the look:

Don't sleep properly for a week,
Don't work out for a couple of days,
Take on sporadic eating patterns,
Stare at computer screens for hours on end,
Force contacts into sting-y eyes,
Sleep in your day clothes,
Divorce makeup.

Then take a final at 7 AM.

Fridays are terrible

When it's finals week.

8pm -12 am last night,
9am-4pm today.

One project.

No Gchatting, no blogging, no Facebooking, one vending machine snack break.

Strictly finishing (not starting, we're talking editing the multimedia I shot) it for its deadline...

That I found out at 3:30 pm was extended.

Four people from my class laughed at me.

But I'm DONE with it, so I think the joke is actually on them.

We sought Britney

It was HOT!
The sets, the costumes, the montages, the transitional videos!!!

I was expecting a lot more explosive dancing from her, and although on second look, she did have better dancing than PCD (I concede, Brook :))...she did lipsynch the entire thing.

But it's perfectly fine: my 6th grade dreams were realized, and that's all that matters.

And little did I realize, even though I was sitting right next to her, Tara twittered the whole thing!!

So here are some exclusive clips, courtesy of the one and only Free Swag Queen herself!

PCD (Nicole Scherzinger has PIPES):

Jai Ho- AMAZING- you can hear me yelling it at the end of it...

Buttons

To keep people entertained while they set up for Britney, they had a lot of 'circus performers'....perform! (And carneys ran around the stage too)

AND THEN BRITNEY!

Perez Hilton opening act

Britney's Entrance

If You Seek Amy

Radar

Music Video Montage...Britney through the years (kinda bittersweet haha)

Boys- One of the most underrated Britney songs...the Co-Ed Remix I've LOVED since high school

Baby One More Time

Anyways, hope y'all enjoy them!

I will echo Britney's closing remarks, "Don't drink and drive!"

Training Update Pt. II

About 3 weeks until R-Day.

After a brief (1.5 week) running hiatus...due to sidelining blisters, lower back rehab-ing, etc...

I'm back on my feet.

Ran 9 miles on Monday. Didn't know I had it in me. Seriously.

Even though sometimes after long runs I feel nauseous, salty and dehydrated (and I drink the most water of anyone I know)....

...plus pavement pounding hasn't been the smartest thing to do for my neck, lower back, or knees....

running around this May 9 won't be so bad.

I don't see running becoming a hobby after this. But it's been a good goal. A good boredom buster in this Utah Valley monotony.

I can't wait to get back to the days of solely yoga (Bikram in SLC this fall which I am so so excited about), pilates and walking. It suits me better.

Inglourious Basterds

I am savoring up this month's Vanity Fair...
(read about my love affair with the publication here and here).

Cover Story: "...And God Created Gisele"
So fitting! Mario Testino does fabulous work. Link to the story here.

Strange Obama cover from a Singapore publication dubbed as "GQ meets the Economist." Interesting.

And I cannot wait until I get my hands on Inglourious Basterds ... (I am a total WWII junkie!) debuting this month at the Cannes Film Festival.

Hottubbing: Provo's bar scene

Since Provo is void of alcohol (minus shady Atchafalaya on Center Street)... I think the totally kosher BYU activity known as "hottubbing" constitutes what would be the bar scene anywhere else.

Think about it...scantily clad girls with the scamming guys, in a steamy environment...totally kosher BYU housing activity.

(BYU also approves hairschoolers to live in BYU housing...but girls can't be in guys apartments after midnight...let's just say "Go Figure" (with accompanying eye-roll and head-scratch) has been the most reoccuring theme of my BYU life.)

Anyway, the totally kosher activity of hottubbing is not without its creepers- you know, the Provo All-Stars who don't have a clear idea of what they're still slinking around UV for (with their BMWs they bought on their parent's dime or from their shady summer APX sales) who come around, hit on girls, and sometimes an ensuing NCMO will occur.

My friends and I learned from the rumors, are nice to these creepers, say our code name for "peace out" to each other, and kindly leave.

I think the only thing that would make 'hottubbing' more interesting would be if the GAs made us gals wear burkinis:

Utah driving violations

Violations:

Going 70 in the fast lane.

Going 30 on University Avenue.

Brake checking me while I tailgate you to move over while you are doing the a fore mentioned. (Yes, I'm quite aware I'm right on your rear!)

Dear UDs,

Let me introduce to you these things called "stop signs" - They are red with white lettering. How they work is you push your brake pedal slightly, then keep going. You were born with peripheral vision; use it.

Also, we have these things in California called "carpool lanes"- they just put them in your state here a little while ago. If you can't count another human in your car with you, then you cannot. use. them.
Double white lines are not passing lanes.
If I can properly refrain, you can too.
(PS: I'm convinced if they put the black diamond symbols on the carpool lane signs here, it would be the ski bum apocalyptic equivalent of the Yakima'd Subarus).

And lastly, dear drivers, when there is something happening on the OTHER side of the freeway, it does not warrant a lookie-loo.

I know that flashing lights are exciting, but try to contain your curiosity, because maintenance trucks are not peep (road)shows.

I welcome your vents in the comments.

Gorilla marketing, and other nuggets

Snowboarded Snow Basin Monday, and let's just say, I finally, truly, really understand ski/boarder junkies now.
10 runs in 3 hours due to the combination of hauling it down the mountain and fast gondolas, where we had lots of chit-chat with older people who inspired me to live well.
Glorious.

In a nutshell, from a gem of a lady from Oregon we met:
"You've got to keep moving, because as soon as you sit down, it's over!"

---

Was handed one of these by a wordless ape-costumed fellow at the bottom of the 800 N 200 E ramp this morning on the way to class..

...so does this constitute 'gorilla marketing'?
(Yes that is a veggie tales band-aid, due to my pinkie crunching in the opening gondola door at Snowbasin...err, I mean, catching it in my binding going off a jump ;))

---

As one of the few iPhone-less in the world nowadays, learning how to put Twitter in my Gmail was the next best thing to up and Steve Job-ing myself with one...

Learn how HERE. Takes 1 minute, tops.

---

In other news, I took a nap yesterday from approximately 6:30-10:30pm.
Glorious.
I dreamed about updating my Facebook status to something about czars and scars (long story with, come to think of it, a lot of anti-war overtones...but bottom line is that, yes, I have rhythmically-worded dreams.)

being a super senior,

and that Coco Rocha blogged about me.

---

Also, did you hear Al Gore met with LDS Church officials?! Read about it here.
I respect anyone who was sitting with my dad when the JFK assassination was announced (true story).

---

In other news, I'm realizing the jig is up.
Namely, other people, besides me, are onto the fact that my blog is primarily a venting medium for
a) how I can't wait to leave Provo and
b) my undying love for Michelle Obama...

So I promise, fans (which apparently includes Peter now...), I promise more varied blogging is on its way. Don't believe me?
Well, trust me when I say I have about 10 half-completed drafts waiting to finish and publish...

In the meantime, I leave you chums with this article: greener pastures are ahead (all entendres intended).

XOXO,
A

Apostate-gate

Just for the record, I know the girl who made the error, and she is probably one of the sweetest people I know. I would have so rather taken the guilt over this than her because trust me, she doesn't deserve it.

I also know Rich Evans (quoted in the above article...mocked in the not-worth-your-time comments), and he is a really really decent, humorous, and upstanding guy who made the BYU newsroom fun for my tenure there.

I think he said it best in his Facebook status update yesterday: "Rich Evans is tired of getting feedback from people who have lived mistake-free lives."

Really, it's all about the media being dissuaded thinking there is a story over the fuss created by disgruntled ex-Mormons trying to take a whack at their former religion any way they can.

Just like the Octomom has annoyingly dominated the news for a while, the fact that this warranted an AP story must mean there are not many newsworthy things to report. Hmm.

Dear journalists,
Hate to break it to you, but you're only making yourselves look uninformed. And in the media, being uninformed equals bad.
I urge you to put two and two together.

Thanks,
Alex

Physicality phactor

I kid you not, standing at a good 5'11"...

(6' if I've done a lot of lengthening pilates lately)

....I attribute part of my obsession with Michelle O being the fact that I get a kick out of knowing how I would look standing next to the itsy foreign dignitaries.

With Nicholas and Carla Bruni-Sarkozy of France

With German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer

As soon as my life slows down for 5 minutes, I'm going to submit that to PostSecret...

so if it ever becomes published, you lucky ones will know it originated here.

Oh, and I had to include the following, because it speaks progressive volumes:
It's Sauer and Michelle having a snack while President O and Angela did their business.

Prague dazzles again!

MICHELLE was at the Pinkas Synagogue (Pinkasova Sinagoga) in Prague yesterday.
Are we meant to be friends or what.

Political persuasions aside, let's be glad we have a President who doesn't mistake the Czech Republic for "Chechnya" (as W did... and that Simon not so fondly remembers.)

(Courtesy MSNBC)

And I nearly started bawling my eyes out at the exhibit of children's drawings at the Pinkas Synagogue (no photos allowed, or I would have posted below), and it was one of her most memorable parts of the Old Jewish Quarter.

Here's me there in January. Pretty sure my face was frozen.

The cemetery with the stacked tombstones. I'm getting better at my solemn face.

Geez, world, why can't we all just get along?

Coming from a community back home where nearly 40% of my high school was Jewish (a good portion of my younger years was spent believing the world was half Jewish/half Christian), it goes without saying I take an interest in their culture with deep love and respect...and Bar Mitzvah's are pretty fun too.

But in all seriousness, next to Sachsenhaussen concentration camp, the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, Gerda Weissman Klein giving an address at my high school, or David Faber at my middle school, the Pinkasova Sinagoga (with the dedicatory museum and cemetery) was another great Jewish experience......and I'm so glad Michelle liked it too!

(I only wish my bubbala had been there with me)

At Sachsenhaussen CC, Germany- April '08
Arbeit Macht Frei- "Work will set you free"

As I will tritely, yet succinctly, reiterate...love Prague. love Jews. love Michelle.

Michelle meets the Queen

So some people are calling this a royal faux-pas....

but I think that it's symbolic of how silly I find England's royal tradition...

and how they should take a cue from what the Obama's are trying to spread...

LOVE

Read more about what happened (spoiler: it has a happy ending!) on Smitten.

Also, I got teary (once again) when I saw Mrs. O give this talk to girls at Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School.

Ahhh! I love her more than life itself!!!

This one's for my fans...

I've secretly thought celebrities look ridiculous when they are interviewed or give some awards speech and always thank "their fans"...

You know, to the tune of some variation of "I wouldn't be here without my fans"....

or,

holding up their Oscar staring into the abyss of the Kodak Theater with their personally-trained, low-carb, high-protein bicep, they'll chipper "this one's for my fans!!!"

.....they're addressing the many thousands/millions/billions of people who idolize their talent, envy their financial stability, scrutinize their weight loss/gain through the tabloids, lust after their looks, worship their artistic genius, whatever their choice of fanfare may be....

Well, now I think I get it.

In the past couple days and weeks, I've come across a lot of people I don't normally see (my friends are found in many various places), that have all said they enjoy reading 'my own shade of yellow journalism' aka 'Burnt Mustard' aka this blog...

and I want you to know I really appreciate it!

Because as a writer, having readers of your work is like being an athlete, having people come to watch your games.

And when readers like my writing (as displayed in posted and verbalized comments), it's as if I've 'won' a game.

Simply put, it's the cherry on top of what I love to do.

So, to all my fans,
on this 1-year anniversary of Burnt Mustard's founding,
I dedicate this post to you.

Thank you!

Summer taking shape...

Dedicated to plans already set and those currently unforeseen:

Move in to DC early May...

Lots of internship working...and friend-making...and real-world eschewing...

Half marathon with cousin and her friends. Dad flying out to cheer us on...

NYC trip (of many) for another cousin's baby blessing, which will include Lion King on Broadway (last time was in London in 2004, so I'm excited to see it again!)...

Massive family reunion at the lake....boating with the cousins, tennis, swimming, lots of cards and all-night Settlers of Catan tournaments, movies in the basement 'theater,' loving life....

Red Sox game in July with the cousins. Enough said. I love Fenway Park.

Friends pledging to visit from the West and the East...

More city discovery and friend-making and re-connecting...

Saying hello to many trains, subways, and metros... hopefully very few planes (I hate the whole airport charade).

Dear East Coast,
I'm coming back to you yet again....and I couldn't be more stoked.

With great anticipation and love,
Alex

The facebook fenomenon

In case you are a martian, social media is taking over the world.

But I love it, because its how I keep in contact with people. I can't tell you how many times it has helped me with job/internship applications, keeping in touch with friends and family I don't see often, facilitated travel plans, etc...

Read Betty's post for her take on this phenomenon.

Here's a recent NY Times article on Facebook's own status.
200 million users!
1 million new users every day!
70% of users outside the US!

...and I thought my friend count of 692 was a lot!

Another article on a mom joining Facebook (mine has one too).

I think some youngsters are worried that being Facebook friends with employers, teachers, professors or parents will get them in trouble.

But I figure I have nothing to hide, because the shenanigans the older generations got themselves into when they were my age were just as innocent, human or scandalous as what I'm doing now...

Reminds me of when my sisters and I were skeptical to let our mom watch Mean Girls with us: we thought she'd be offended or shocked or something, but instead got the opposite of expected reaction of her nearly rolling on the floor in laughter, crying "Oh my gosh! This is hilarious! Nothing about high school dynamics has changed!"

Just like that, our lives are not much different with exceptions to technological exposure.

Although, my life is boringly void of scandal, so I guess I just don't see it as an issue. Stay tuned ;)

Materialism backlash

Leave it to the comedic geniuses of SNL to break down what 'credit' means and how to stay out of debt.

Senioritis

I wish I were April fooling.

Rindz and my sleeping arrangements for the past 2+ weeks...
my bed situated on the right, where I had just taken off my gray cardigan and jumped on to MGMT's Electric Feel (the theme song for the impending summer, we decided) and Facebooked to procrastinate my paper...
(which, ps, you people need to blog more! Facebook is super boring when compared to Blogger RSS feed updates!)

Something that IS funny....when Gmail temporarily malfunctions and I see this on my page.

It's like the feeling you get when you're pulled over: you're not a fugitive but not a 100% law-abiding citizen either.
(But in the case of Gmail, you did nothing wrong, so I guess that's not an equal comparison. Oh well.)

Watched Rachel Getting Married yesterday, and I recommend it.

Cool to see Anne Hathaway so raw...It's about dealing with unfinished business in your past (or letting it be the excuse for your present addictions), the dynamics of family and sisterhood, and what it means to come and confront the meaning of "home." Pervasive use of violins in the score, which makes it hauntingly meaningful.

Happy day, you fools!

Moving into DC at the end of this month. And that's the truth. YAY.
