Reflections on my 21st bygone year

(Or "Musings on becoming legal")

On paper, it was maybe one of the worst years to date (eh, no that would be high school). I probably logged more hours in doctors offices and pharmacies in the first half than time spent out with friends. But in terms of learning, I couldn't have asked for more. Really. Sooo cliche: sue me.

Here's a little recap:

Experienced the highest recurring form of physical pain to date, popping ibuprofen and narcotics like candy, including racing up and down I-15 (Provo-SLC) with ice packs pressed to my freezer burnt face for injections and various therapies. A low point was popping some Percosset with intentions to snuggle the pain off in bed, then having my professor call to say I needed to get up to campus in the next half hour to have him sign an "Incomplete" form and submit it to the registrar's office.
I'm better, for the most part.

Learned that driving under the influence is just...not good.

-Oversaw Daily Universe packages for 2008 election coverage.

Learned Tina Fey is a goddess of satire.

-Went to Wyoming for Thanksgiving.

Learned that wide open spaces may in fact be really great...for the rush of galloping a horse.

- Attended a Buddhist wedding of my lovely hippie cousin and her dear Brazilian hubby in Santa Cruz...

(Isn't that the coolest picture of a bride?!)

and also a traditional Mormon wedding reception for another cousin in Orange County.

Two of my four best friends from Spain study abroad also got married.

Learned that love lives.

(Speaking of: men with psychotic wanderlust, intellectual arrogance, and/or cruel casanova complexes need not inquire within. -The Management)

-Spent the summer at the lake, (no malls, gyms, movie theaters or chain restaurants to be found within an hour radius)...ate lots of ice cream and enjoyed myself and my family (and Rayflyer).

(an awkward family photo (mom's hand on Katherine's stomach?) but it's all of us, nonetheless...)

Waterskiied, sky-skiied, and taught myself how to paddleboard.

Took an over two hour Hobie Cat excursion in gnarly waves and wind with my dad (including incident of capsize).
Relaxed. Read a lot of books and blogs. Wrote.

Learned that I can be happy outside of cities. At least in this interim period...

-Met Anderson Cooper, who inspired me to do international foreign correspondence work.

Went to Prague with three of my best friends, only to learn that I don't want to be a foreign correspondent: something about needing to take a crash surgical course in the event that you have to perform surgery on yourself was the kicker.

-Accepted that being a high-functioning individual also requires a high-vigilance and maintenance of well-being. Reconciled that I'm not done reconciling some things, but I'm definitely more myself than I've ever been. And really, I haven't been happier, more sure, determined, or more carefree.

Learned that irony is comical.

-Planned my next adventure ... to Neverland ...
where I will be thrown into "outdoors-y-ness" for the first time. We shall see if 15+ summers in the New England forestry have given me sufficient bug-squashing confidence.
(Last hurrah before the big-city life of my 4-year-old dreams! eee!)

OH, and I went auburn a couple days ago (the closest I will probably ever come to my redhead sisters)

It's true that really don't understand the lessons learned from trials and successes until you reflect upon them.
Thank you, readers, for indulging me.

22? Bring it.

Untitled from the West Pt. 2

Wow.

I do not remember feeling as happy as I am right now in a long time. So full of joy, hope, contentment, and excitement for what lies ahead in life.

I have had such an incredible summer. Charmed, if you will. The theme of it was perspective...

a good friend asked me today at church what my favorite memory this summer was- either having 40 people in our house for a family reunion (yes, 40...Lobster night was just one highlight) .... or having Ray up for an endless gab fest, feeling the spirit of Elijah as we talked about our parents and grandparents, who knew each other way back when.
(oh, and sailing of course...and her making me into the newest Bachelorette fan hehe.)

Yesterday I attended a wedding in Orange County for a cousin and her darling new husband. I got to see family I don't get to see as often as I would like, and caught up with cousins who have achieved goals very similar to what I want to do with my life. They were on average, about 9 years older than me so it's fun to get advice, validation and affirmation...I love having fabulous role models and confidantes. It reminded me how much I actually love growing up, because the whole world keeps opening up to you. My family is extraordinarily divine.

There is folksy music coming in my room from either the neighbor or someone down the hill (we live on a cliff) having a soiree of sorts. It's a titch annoying, but it takes me back to the time in high school when the neighbors had a cocktail party with steel drummers (2 years in a row, actually), and each time I called my friend Liz and we went and TP'ed their Cruella de Ville looking Rolls Royce, as well as made coyote sounds to the guests to 'scare' them as we crept up on the canyon below the veranda. We were such pranksty dorks...

GOOD TIMES.

Life, keep them coming...and Love, save the empty.

(that goldfish thing going on is so What About Bob... how ironic...)

Blue Suit Riot: Episode I

Oh heeyyyy, what did you do today?
I went waterskiing in my new blue suit. yeah....

Strapping in.

The fluorescent orange dorkvest completes the ensemble nicely, don't you think?

Let's rock n roll!

Giddy up!

Literally COULD NOT SEE for the first 30 seconds up.
One of the scarier half minutes of my life.
(Everytime thenceforth when water sprayed my face, I couldn't see until the wind cleared the face enough to see again. Oh, the (totally-worth-it) travails of blue suit waterskiing...)

Spectators who came for me! (hah- completely by chance!)
Too bad I couldn't see their reactions...

"Just a dream and the wind to carry me"

Just like Bob....

we did some sailing today...

(I'd take the wind over no wind; rough waters over stagnant too)

Read RayRay's post for our wind-blown epiphanies.

I leave you with the brilliant words of Chris Cross's song "Sailing"...
I actually prefer NSYNC's rendition.

(I deem this my 'quest for Neverland' theme song.)

"It's not far down to paradise
At least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

It's not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me

Sailing
Takes me away
To where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me

It's not far back to sanity
At least it's not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me"
