Happy holy days

Since I grew up with so many Jewish friends and neighbors, one of my favorite classes at BYU was one about how Judaism relates to Christianity.

(Every fall, some kids set up a sukkot in the SWKT quad, which has always made me smile.)

I emailed my former professor the other day asking him if he could send me a reading I had since lost about the relationship between Christmas and Hannukah...he responded, saying he had since contributed the information to a BYU Religious Studies Center blog.

Happy holidays to you and yours!

Because anyone who knows me knows...

that this warms my heart:

I would also like to start wearing a mezuzah necklace, and have one at my house.

Sartorialist goes to General Conference

(Or something like it.)

I think this post on Conference Street Fashions is so cute!

Being Mormon does not mean you have to take on a fashion palate as frumpy as your elementary school teacher's themed sweaters.

Check out the personalities!

This look was my favorite:

Contains my favorite elements:
juxtaposition of hard and soft i.e. a patterned breezy dress (soft) with leather jacket (hard);
splash of gray for a functional scarf (it was cold that day!), and last but not least FIERCE utilitarian urban shoes.

Back to basics

Loved the GC this weekend.

(Utah's obsessed with acronyms i.e. OMG, did you see the RSP and the EQP in the JSB playing hooky from FHE?)

General Conference- it's where all the Mormons in the world tune in and hear from our main leaders and are reminded how much we are loved by God and other great uplifting things. Semi-annually. This year, there was a constant theme of SERVICE and LOVE expressed.

I love cutting through the cultural nonsense and getting back to basics with GC. Because ironically it's the fundamentals, the essence, that culture tends to mess up, at least for me. Even though I am not perfect myself, sorry Utah, but I get really frustrated with fanatical hyper-righteous interpretations I see here.

My faves: Uchtdorf and Bednar from Saturday AM session, and Holland Sunday PM session (there are 4 main 2-hour sessions).

How about you?

Remembering

I don't have a particularly memorable 'where were you on 9/11' story (as if it matters)- except for the fact that my high school teachers did not let us watch footage (it was onward with their lesson plans) ... so I confirmed the nightmarish rumors back at home circa 3pm PST.

But what is memorable is the unity and hearkening back to values our country experienced. My favorite gospel principle is that of remembering who I am: a child of God. Puts everything in perspective.
It's why I go to church, why I pray, why I study the valuable lessons found in ancient scripture: to remember where I came from and where I'm going.

Kind of like this sister missionary for my church who serves in Chinatown NYC.

Gorilla marketing, and other nuggets

Snowboarded Snow Basin Monday, and let's just say, I finally, truly, really understand ski/boarder junkies now.
10 runs in 3 hours due to the combination of hauling it down the mountain and fast gondolas, where we had lots of chit-chat with older people who inspired me to live well.
Glorious.

In a nutshell, from a gem of a lady from Oregon we met:
"You've got to keep moving, because as soon as you sit down, it's over!"

---

Was handed one of these by a wordless ape-costumed fellow at the bottom of the 800 N 200 E ramp this morning on the way to class..

...so does this constitute 'gorilla marketing'?
(Yes that is a veggie tales band-aid, due to my pinkie crunching in the opening gondola door at Snowbasin...err, I mean, catching it in my binding going off a jump ;))

---

As one of the few iPhone-less in the world nowadays, learning how to put Twitter in my Gmail was the next best thing to up and Steve Job-ing myself with one...

Learn how HERE. Takes 1 minute, tops.

---

In other news, I took a nap yesterday from approximately 6:30-10:30pm.
Glorious.
I dreamed about updating my Facebook status to something about czars and scars (long story with, come to think of it, a lot of anti-war overtones...but bottom line is that, yes, I have rhythmically-worded dreams.)

being a super senior,

and that Coco Rocha blogged about me.

---

Also, did you hear Al Gore met with LDS Church officials?! Read about it here.
I respect anyone who was sitting with my dad when the JFK assassination was announced (true story).

---

In other news, I'm realizing the jig is up.
Namely, other people, besides me, are onto the fact that my blog is primarily a venting medium for
a) how I can't wait to leave Provo and
b) my undying love for Michelle Obama...

So I promise, fans (which apparently includes Peter now...), I promise more varied blogging is on its way. Don't believe me?
Well, trust me when I say I have about 10 half-completed drafts waiting to finish and publish...

In the meantime, I leave you chums with this article: greener pastures are ahead (all entendres intended).

XOXO,
A

Apostate-gate

Just for the record, I know the girl who made the error, and she is probably one of the sweetest people I know. I would have so rather taken the guilt over this than her because trust me, she doesn't deserve it.

I also know Rich Evans (quoted in the above article...mocked in the not-worth-your-time comments), and he is a really really decent, humorous, and upstanding guy who made the BYU newsroom fun for my tenure there.

I think he said it best in his Facebook status update yesterday: "Rich Evans is tired of getting feedback from people who have lived mistake-free lives."

Really, it's all about the media being dissuaded thinking there is a story over the fuss created by disgruntled ex-Mormons trying to take a whack at their former religion any way they can.

Just like the Octomom has annoyingly dominated the news for a while, the fact that this warranted an AP story must mean there are not many newsworthy things to report. Hmm.

Dear journalists,
Hate to break it to you, but you're only making yourselves look uninformed. And in the media, being uninformed equals bad.
I urge you to put two and two together.

Thanks,
Alex

The infamous Charita

My mom and I are really good friends....

We joke sometimes how we were in the premortal existence and played rock/paper/scissors to decide who would come down to Earth first.

...such good friends, we have silly pet names for each other. All two of them:

a) Bubbala (a yiddish term for "darling/dearest"...often we clip it to "Bubbs")

or

b) Charita...who I will discuss...

My mom went through the public school system in 1970s Los Angeles, and Charita was a mean black girl...

(I say 'black' in all politically correct detail purposes...it's no secret my mom secretly wants to be African-American)

...who bullied my mom and even threatened to beat her up once (that's when my grandparents offered to put my mom in private school if she wanted).

Yeah, my sweet mom...was apparently some kind of a threat (or perhaps an easy target) of Charita.

(she uses this as her Facebook profile picture. I know, how cool is she. She claims it's so people can laugh at her dorkiness.)

Another fellow University High School Alum of my mom's year was Paris Hilton's mom.
(Don't worry, my mom was invited to THIS reunion but didn't go...and upon getting word of the Hilton appearance, we all had a good laugh).

I digress...anyway, Charita stories:

1) One day my mom is wearing a white shirt and white shorts, skipping along somewhere at school, sees Charita (and her posse) out of the corner of her eye and does everything to go unnoticed. Next thing she knows, Charita is yanking my mom's long ponytail (which trailed down to her hips) and sneers:

"What color you wearin'..."
"Umm...ehhh.....white?" my mom feebly replied.
"I better not be seeing you wearin' that again, you hear!"
"Ok!!!"

2) Another time, my mom and her friend Suzy were in the school bathroom, and Charita demanded to use Suzy's Bonne Bell Lipsmackers lip balm.
Scared out of her mind, of course Suzy wordlessly obliged, and as soon as Charita had used said lip balm and vacated the premises (homegirl posse in tow), Suzy sliced off an inch of the lip balm, averting scary Charita cooties.

And the kicker...

3) One day in the gym locker room, one of Charita's posse called out:
"Charita, you got some lotion? My skin be gettin' ash-EEEEY....umph!!!"

My mom said she and her friends hid behind their row of lockers, giggling (silently) with gaped-mouths and wide-eyes.

My mom will do a shameless imitation of that, upon simple request.
She will also do the Uni High Cheer Squad (of Kathy Hilton fame) football cheer and choreography as well.

So Charita, wherever you are, I hope you know you never cease to be a freakish fascination (and name substitution) for your former bully target and her daughters.

I hope to meet you one day, and I hope you won't beat me up.

Sincerely, Alex

The Publicity Dilemma

I really like the Church Newsroom's Web site, because it cuts through a lot of rumors that swarm about Mormon culture.

For example, I thought this was a very dignified response to what is being disrespectfully exploited on Big Love.

For elites of the film industry to claim they're tolerant, then rashly show things we regard as sacred, is maddeningly disrespectful.

For example, it's like if you approached a Muslim woman and demanded she remove her hajib because, oh I don't know, you were curious to see what she looked like...regardless of reason, it's just so offensive!
The amount of hajib a woman covers herself with is a personal decision, and we should all respect that woman for covenanting with Allah in the way she has decided!

Go here if you'd like to give HBO feedback. It takes two seconds.

I didn't weep and rail on them, I simply just said that I find their exploitations offensive and intolerant.
